Hongyu Gong went to Victoria University of Wellington and University of Auckland in New Zealand in 1988 to study for master’s degrees ofethnomusicology and
translatology and a doctorate of Sinology. He has taught in Auckland University of Technology and Unitec Institute of Technology since 1996 and is currently a part-time review editor of The Journal of Asian Studies in New Zealand (English version) and a part-time professor of the School of Art and Design, Yunnan University. GONG focuses on Sino-westernmusical exchange, westerners’ musical life in China, and the relationship between westerners in China and Chinese music. He has published over 100 original papers and translation papers on multiple journals, such as CHIME-Journal of the European Foundation for Chinese Music Research,New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies, and Journal of Music in China and introduced dozens of his English papers at international academic seminars in Germany, America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other countries and regions. He has also published a monograph named Music on the Sea: Western Musicians and Music after Shanghai Opened to the Outside World (1843 - 1910).
