This book is a relatively complete, enriched, and self-organized work on ancient Chinese. Consisting of 20 chapters, it broadly discusses such specialized items as philology, phonology, exegetics, explanation of special meaning of words, sentence pattern, flexible use of parts of speech, special words, different grammar in ancient and modern times, rhetoric, bibliography, etc. The characteristics of this book are as follows: 1. Focus on vocabulary; 2. As to grammar, point out grammar problems different from modern Chinese and expound in the context of sentence pattern instead of making overall narration from the perspectives of morphology and syntax in a normal way; 3. Unlike common textbooks on general theory, pay attention to expound ancient Chinese based on ancient literature; 4. Indicate the means of ancient Chinese research and reveal important principles of ancient Chinese, such as “meaning exists in pronunciation” and “similar pronunciations suggest close meanings”; 5. Related materials of important reference value written by people of the ancient and modern times are provided in the appendix.
